A stainless steel litter tray sitting inside a tall black hood that is open across the front. Steel does not scratch and does not hold odour — the two reasons plastic trays start to smell after a year no matter how often you wash them.

What it does

  • 60 × 40 cm of floor space. Room for a large cat to turn around and dig properly, which is what cats do when they are comfortable using a tray.
  • Stainless steel base. Non-porous, so urine cannot soak in. Plastic gets scratched by claws and by scoops, and those scratches are where the smell lives.
  • High back and sides, open front. The hood is a tall surround with a wide entry — there is no lid over the top and no swing door. It catches the litter an enthusiastic digger kicks backwards, and the cat who stands up to urinate, without shutting them in.
  • The hood lifts off. Unclip it from the steel tray to empty and wash the tray properly.
  • Stepped lip at the entry. Paws land on a textured step on the way out, so most of what they carry drops back into the tray.
  • Scoop, mat and anti-slip pads included.
  • Black hood on a brushed steel tray.

Good to know

  • The right tray size is about one and a half times your cat's body length, nose to base of tail. This one suits large cats; check it against yours.
  • This is not a covered box. If you wanted something that contains the smell or gives a nervous cat privacy, this is not it. If your cat dislikes being enclosed — and plenty do, particularly in a multi-cat house where being cornered matters — that is in this tray's favour.
  • The rule of thumb is one tray per cat plus one spare, in separate locations. It solves more toileting problems than any single product does.
  • Steel is louder than plastic when a cat digs. Most cats do not care; a nervous one might.
