A scissor-style nail clipper with an LED in the head. Half-moon blade, hardened stainless steel, a lock slider on the handle, and a CR2032 battery that lasts about a year.

What it does

  • LED light. Shone through a pale nail, it makes the quick — the blood vessel inside — easier to see, so you can cut short of it.
  • Half-moon blade. Curved to the shape of a claw, so the nail sits in the blade instead of being squashed flat by it.
  • Hardened stainless steel. Cuts cleanly rather than crushing or splitting the nail, which is what a blunt clipper does and why some dogs hate having nails done.
  • Lock slider. Slide it across and the blades stay shut — for storage, and so the join cannot close on your fingers while you are handling a wriggling animal.
  • CR2032 battery. Included and pre-fitted, and good for around a year of normal use.

Good to know

  • There is no clipping catcher on this model. Clippings drop where you cut them, so work over a towel, a bin or the laundry floor rather than the lounge.
  • The light does not work on black nails. It shines through pale nails only. On dark nails, take very small slices and stop as soon as you see a pale oval appear in the cut face — that is the quick approaching.
  • Keep styptic powder within reach before you start. Everyone catches a quick eventually; it bleeds a lot and it hurts, and powder stops it in seconds.
  • Check the colour you are ordering. The green and pink versions have the LED. The grey version does not.
  • Little and often beats a monthly session. Regular trimming lets the quick recede, which makes each cut easier.
  • If your pet is frightened of nail trims, do one nail a day and reward it. Do not wrestle them through all four paws.

Care
