Cat Cage 3-Tier DIY Catio Cat Enclosures

A three-level metal pen with ramps between the tiers and a hammock, for cats and small animals. Useful as a safe place to put an animal for a few hours — while the front door is open, while a new pet is being introduced, or while you are outside gardening.

What it does

• Three levels joined by ramps. Vertical space matters more to a cat than floor space — they will use the top tier most.
• Hammock included. Slings across a tier and becomes the preferred sleeping spot almost immediately.
• Three doors. Reach in from whichever side the pen ends up facing, and feed or clean without dismantling anything.
• Modular assembly. Panels, connectors and ties, so you can set the tiers where you want them.
• Indoors or on a covered verandah. Metal construction handles both.

Honest limits — please read

• It measures 61 × 41 × 91 cm (24" × 16" × 36"). That is a playpen, not a home. The supplier lists it for up to three cats; we do not agree. One cat for a few hours is what this size honestly supports.
• A cat in a pen still needs a litter tray, water and somewhere to lie down. Work out where all three go before you buy — at this footprint, that is most of the bottom tier.
• Not a substitute for a secure outdoor catio. If your cat is outside in it, they must be supervised, in shade, with water.
• Also used for rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets. Check the bar spacing against your animal, and check your state's rules on which species may be kept at all.
• Never leave any animal in a wire pen in the sun. Shade moves; a pen does not.
