Pet Grooming Combo – Undercoat Rake & Stainless Steel Comb

A two-sided undercoat rake and a two-sided steel comb. Between them they cover the whole job on a medium or long coat — open a tangle with the wide teeth, then work the fine side through to check it is really out.

What's in the set

• Dual-sided undercoat rake. Wide teeth for detangling and easing mats apart; dense teeth for pulling dead undercoat out.
• Dual-sided stainless steel comb. Wide teeth for the first pass, fine teeth for finishing and for checking behind ears and under legs.

What it does

• Takes out the coat that is already dead. Double-coated breeds drop undercoat in clumps — raking it out is the difference between hair in the bin and hair on every surface in the house.
• Finds mats early. A steel comb tells you where the knots are starting, days before they become mats you cannot brush out.
• Steel holds its shape. Teeth do not bend or splay the way plastic ones do.

Good to know

• Light pressure. A rake dragged hard over the same patch causes brush burn — red, sore skin. Let the tool do the work and move around the body.
• Do not force a rake through a solid mat. It pulls the skin, which is lifted up inside the mat. Tight mats are a groomer or vet job.
• Best for medium, long and double coats. A short single-coated dog needs a rubber curry, not a rake.
• Never shave a double-coated dog for summer. The undercoat insulates against heat as well as cold, and it may not grow back correctly. Rake it out instead.
