What it does

• 5 metres of line. Enough for a dog to circle and sniff on a wide verge without you following every step.
• Torch in the handle. Points where you are walking — useful for finding what your dog has just put in their mouth, and for the bit of the yard with no light.
• Light ring on the housing. A dual-sided glowing ring that makes you visible to cars and cyclists from the side, which a torch pointed forward does not.
• One-button lock. Thumb down to lock the length, press and release to let more out.

Honest limits — worth knowing before you buy a retractable

• Keep it locked short near roads and other dogs. Five metres of slack is five metres your dog can be into traffic before you react. Lock it at arm's length in any situation that matters and only let line out in open space.
• Do not grab a running line. A retractable cord under load can cut or burn a hand badly. If you need to stop the dog, use the brake.
• Not for a strong puller. This is built for small dogs, puppies and cats. A dog that hits the end of the line at speed can break the mechanism, and the sudden stop is hard on their neck — always run a retractable to a harness, never to a collar.
• Never clip a retractable to a breakaway collar.
• The mechanism is the part that wears out. Check that the line retracts cleanly and the lock holds, and retire it when it does not.
